Did you not think the sequence of steps for learning new ideas (understand the context this idea was developed in, first start small with a specific scenario, try to apply concept in related scenarios etc etc) was useful? The approach of starting small and recursively building layers of understanding is how concepts are learned in various subjects. Would you disagree?
